(Melbourne) Top Paddock

As a city renowned for its coffee and brunch scene, it’s tough picking favorites here. But if I were to choose, Top Paddock would be sitting somewhere on that list of ‘Favorite Cafes’ (or something). I loved where it’s situated, the food, the service, the decor, the ambiance – everything. While the food wasn’t perfect nor to-die-for, it’s holistically one of the better cafes out there that I would often recommend to others. However, take note that I haven’t had a chance to be back here for a while now, and it seems that certain changes have been made to the menu.

 – General Review –

Overall Rating: 8.9/10

Pros 🙂

  1. Excellent servicescape, in fact one of my favorite cafes in terms of ambiance and environment; from the abundance of natural sunlight brightening up the spacious interior, to the balance of elements that decorated the cafe.
  2. Amazing food and drinks.
  3. Amazing location – East Richmond’s probably one of the most enjoyable places to go around on foot.
  4. Opened everyday.

Cons 😦

  1. No changes to the menu.
  2. Some dishes could be tweaked a little for improvement.

1) Mocha: [X]

An excellent cup of mocha with brilliant presentation, paired with a marshmallow and it’s perfect for those who like their mocha slightly sweeter.

2) Chai Tea: [X]

I was quite fond of the chai, even though the taste was a bit mild.

3) Hot Chocolate: [X]

Neither too sweet nor bitter, the rich hot chocolate looked too pretty to be drunk.

4) Soft Shell Crab Burger: [X]

The burger was absolutely savory, and its portion was perfect since the soft shell crab was a little too oily although the dill salad helped to balance things out a bit.

5) Wagyu Steak Sandwich w/ Fried Egg: [ ]

The portion of the wagyu served was generous, wasn’t too well-done, and was juicy and flavorful. However, the meat was slightly cold and tough to chew at times. (P.S. Not sure if this item is still on the menu.)

6) Slow Cooked Kurobuta Pork Shoulder: [ ]

I could taste the sweetness from the pork, saltiness from the bread, and a bit of spiciness from the sauce, but somehow, none of them really stood out or blended well together. Nevertheless, the dish was decent and I loved the chewy bread that was – contrary to expectations – easy to cut. (P.S. Again, I’m not sure if this item is still available on the menu.)

7) Top Paddock: [X]

This dish would be perfect for those carnivores out there – laden with plenty of meat, and grease overload. Quite a generous portion and likely to be satisfying for those who have a large appetite.
