(Melbourne) Big Mama

IMG_2383

I’ve tried Big Mama almost three years ago and thought the food here was pretty good. Came here again recently and I found myself unexpectedly disappointed. Not sure if the quality has gone downhill since the last time I was here, or if it just so happened to be that way that particular day, or I didn’t order the ‘right’ stuff, but I’m not sure if I’ll want to come back again. Perhaps one of the only redeeming factors is its convenient and accessible location, especially since it’s a short walking distance to both RMIT University and University of Melbourne, and it’s close to the Swanston Street/Queensberry Street tram stop.

 – General Review –

  •  Service: 7/10

Service was decent and prompt, and the restaurant accepts both cash and card.

  • Servicescape: 7.5/10

A small to medium-sized restaurant, Big Mama is also located to both RMIT University and University of Melbourne campuses, which is convenient for both students and staffs alike. It may be a little cramped inside and can seat small groups of people, but atmosphere is typically quite relaxing and comfortable.

  • Non-smoking area: Seats are indoors and smoke-free.
  • Vegetarian dishes: Yes, several vegetarian dishes available.
  • Price range: $$ (AU$13 – $15 for most main dishes.)

Overall Rating: 6/10

 – Food Experience –

1) Mandoo:

The Mandoo (dumplings) were fried and came in 8 pieces, and although the stuffing was great, it was quite sparse and the skin was pretty tough to chew as well. Overall, I found it just mediocre.

2) Korean BBQ Beef:

Pretty disappointed with the Korean BBQ Beef, as the dish tasted too sweet and… watery. Beef was thinly sliced and quite oily, and the only thing I liked about the dish was that the portion was filling enough. Not that it was extremely pleasant to finish up a bowl of rather watery beef bulgogi though.

3) Korean BBQ Chicken:

The Korean BBQ Chicken was somewhat better than the Korean BBQ Beef. It was a little spicy, portion was also quite generous, although in general I thought the quality was just average.
