(Melbourne) Freestyle Espresso

One of the numerous brunch places located on (or near to) Coventry Street is Freestyle Espresso. One of the first impressions I’ve got was how pet-friendly the cafe was – I’ve seen several people enjoying their brunch after walking their dogs, while their pets sit comfortably next to them. The variety of food choices wasn’t very diverse, but the quality was good, albeit a little pricey.

 – General Review –

  •  Service: 8.5/10

Friendly, prompt, and helpful service. Very friendly with pets too, and even provided them with water and treats.

  • Servicescape: 8/10

Simple and cozy interior with classic color design of white, black, and brown (from wooden furnishing). Very relaxing, quiet, and peaceful atmosphere. Some seats outside weren’t under the shade, which can get a bit too hot or cold, and wasn’t very clean as well. There were also limited seats as it’s a fairly small cafe.

  • Non-smoking area: Seats are indoors and smoke-free. Outdoor seats available too.
  • Vegetarian dishes: Yes, vegetarian dishes available.
  • Price range: $$ (AU$8 – $17 for most main dishes.)

Overall Rating: 8.7/10

 – Food Experience –

1) Mocha:

I loved the mocha here! It was a little sweeter than average, but the coffee’s still pretty good and strong.

2) Italian Hot Chocolate:

Really enjoyed the Italian Hot Chocolate here as well. It was also a little towards the sweet side, but since I have a sweet tooth I didn’t mind as much. A perfect cup of hot chocolate that can make anyone’s day.

3) Pork Belly:

The Pork Belly was part of the specials of the day, and it was so well-made. Apart from the small portion, the quality of the dish was worth every cent – the beetroot relish was amazing and complemented the pork belly, a well-poached egg, and refreshing green apple salad to balance out the oiliness from the bacon. Loved it even though it was slightly overpriced.

4) Grilled Mushrooms:

My favorite from Freestyle Espresso is the Grilled Mushrooms. The portion was perfect, the mushrooms were great and cheese was delectable. The haloumi’s salty on it’s own, so pair it with the mushroom, poached egg, and toast for a more balanced flavor. The dukkah were extremely fragrant and gave a distinct and aromatic taste to the dish. Nothing I could fault for this dish – highly recommended!
