(Melbourne) Stove Monkey

IMG_2369

I went to Stove Monkey on a Saturday noon with my friends and I’m disappointed to say that it was one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had. The small cafe is located on Clarendon Street and it’s quite easily accessible, and although I genuinely thought the dishes here were decent, the portion were so unreasonably little that neither of us were remotely satisfied. Service was sub-par, food was extremely overpriced, and the cafe also didn’t give off a friendly and comfortable atmosphere. Definitely won’t be going back anytime soon.

 – General Review –

  •  Service: 4/10

Service was standard, the waitress was a little impatient and unfriendly. The cafe seemed understaffed and food took a long time to be served. Food portion are ridiculously small too.

  • Servicescape: 6.5/10

The cafe is small, limited seats, but with relaxing music playing in the background. Bright, colorful, with plenty of quaint decorations as well, including vintage and antique-like paintings. Outdoor seats are available too under the shade.

  • Vegetarian dishes: Yes, several vegetarian dishes available.
  • Price range: $$ (AU$8 – $18 for most dishes.)

Overall Rating: 4.9/10

 – Food Experience –

1) Mocha:

The Mocha wasn’t bad and it also had quite a rich chocolate taste, but it was a little too hot. Serving it in a hot chocolate glass also made it a little difficult to hold and drink. It was still pretty good though.

2) Crunchy Poached Eggs:

Despite the puny portion, I thought the Crunchy Poached Eggs was delicious. The corn fritter was a little cold though, but the salmon was great. Since the poached eggs were fried, the outside was crispy and quite fragrant. But the portion was just too little, so I thought the dish was really overpriced.

3) Crispy Calamari & Chorizo:

Again, I had no problem with the taste and flavor of the dish. The chorizo and calamari were delicious and the latter was fried really nicely, but the problem lies with the portion again.

4) Corned Beef & Poached Eggs on Muffins:

I enjoyed the poached eggs with the hollandaise sauce, and the corned beef was good too. But I didn’t think it was worth $15.
